Banned Books Week Cards

These were created as part of a competition put on by the PCHS Library Learning Commons during banned books week. The goal was to illustrate banned books on a trading-card sized canvas.

Call of the Wild

Call of the Wild shows the true nature of animals when they are forced to try to survive and the struggle to be on top. The most important thing in the wild is kill or be killed. I had the idea of a hierarchy in mind when creating this.

The Great Gatsby

This piece uses symbolism from the original Gatsby book cover, a well-known piece of art in American literature. The book cover has played a role in the book since before it was released.

Of Mice and Men

The complex characters in Of Mice and Men and what they represent are what make this book a classic. Lennie, one of the main characters has a one-track mind that ultimately leads to his downfall.

Looking for Alaska

Looking for Alaska is packed with symbolism, including the main character’s smoking habit and the mysterious white flower. This piece combines those symbols to represent good growing from the roots of evil.

Brave New World

Brave New World is a satire on the consumer society. Soma, a drug that citizens of the fictional society take, represents the willingness of humans to follow the crowd.
